Friday Trivia #43 (early)

Yes, I know it's Wednesday, but I'm out of town this weekend. Anyway, this week, Trivia meets Perl code. Having just downloaded SAPI 5.1 and installed Win32::SAPI5 (thanks jouke), I naturally wrote this piece of code first:

my $voice = Win32::SAPI5::SpVoice->new();
$voice->Speak("Shall we play a game?");

For 25 Trivia Points, which movie was my inspiration for this bit of Perl code?

      • No! The name of the computer is not Joshua! Joshua is Dr. Falken's dead kid, and the password he uses.

        It makes no sense at all that when Matt "I got to make out with Ally Sheedy, but then I made Godzilla" Broderick yells at Dr. Falken "I know about Joshua!" that he would associate it with WOPR. That's always bothered me.

        • I think I'm confused then. I seem to recall Falken saying something like "Joshua, what are you doing?" when he enters the command center thingy towards the end of the movie. I always assumed that WOPR was the name the DOD gave to the system but its original name (according to that scene anyway) was Joshua. Of course I could have the wrong end of the stick entirely :-)
          • Obviously haven't had time to watch the movie again (that's what tonight is for) but someone else [moviequotes.com] remembers the "Joshua, what are you doing" quote (so at least I know I'm not on drugs). WOPR and Joshua might both be the correct answer depending on context. Wikipedia notes [wikipedia.org] that Joshua is the name of the program that the WOPR is running. So who knows, maybe Lasker & Parkes are the only ones who know for sure :-)
