No kidding. It took me forever to save up the money to upgrade, because I also needed a new printer, scanner, and wacom tablet in order to run OS X.
..But then I found a really cool reason _to_ buy a Mac. Mac-On-Linux. [maconlinux.org]
So now I can have a Dual-proc 1.25 GHz Debian PowerPC Linux workstation, and _still_ run Mac OS9 and OSX applications at full processor speed. It's the best of all worlds, as far as I can tell.
Umax is one of the worst. A lot of companies did not do updated drivers, but Umax was in widespread use by Mac users, and they just abandoned the slightly older hardware on the newer platform. Lost a lot of repeat business, I imagine.

But still. It's expensive.
