"Americans" will stop making grand, stereotypical statements about "the French" if "the French" stop making grand, stereotypical statements about "Americans".
OK, maybe we can't speak for our countrymen, but perhaps we can start with ourselves.
We should work on our countrymen stopping, but where's the fun in us stopping?;-P
Besides I don't consider the above as a stereotypical statement, it's just that "patriotic" doesn't mean "supportive of America" if you're not American. On nihilist days I find that amusing.
The statement -- by saying "Americans" without qualification (I know, obviously not intended to be all or most Americans), added to the comment about dropping dictionaries on US cities (that implies a large number of Americans at the least) -- appeared to me to be on the bad side of stereotypical. Whatever. Frenchy.:)
By saying "Americans" I meant two American guys engaged in conversation with one another, and with one of them saying it. I think I would have come back in shock if there had been enough of those to make me think a majority thought that:) The part about dictionaries is surreal intervention. Tss, silly Merkin.;)
