Here's my latest water bill:

Water: 4.30 euros
Service: 7.44 euros
City hall: 1.48 euros
Variable sanitation: 2.81 euros
Fixed sanitation: 2.19 euros
IVA (taxes): 0.59 euros

Total: 18.81 euros

So... I'm only consuming 4.30 euros of water, but I'm paying over 4 times that!

I would guess that the sanitation charges are for pipes carrying sewage away from your abode, so you would need to dig a privy in addition to digging a well.

You aren't paying for water as much as you are paying for the delivery of the water and the removal of the waste that happens when you use water.

In the end, it is a small price for the time that you gain by not having to retrieve and dispose of it yourself. (IMHO. I did a lot of camping this year with a pop-up camper... I was amazed at the amount of time and effort required to carry a 5 gallon bucket of grey water to the proper disposal points.)

Not to mention how much healthier the situation is...
