I'm more of a BBC junkie than NPR junkie, but I've been off-and-on using Perl to solve the weekly puzzle, when it appeared amenable to attack with/usr/dict/words. I presented my use of Perl to cheat at word-puzzles to Boston.PM 2003-12-09, http://world.std.com/~wdr/x/wesun/WESun.html [std.com], which includes discussion of 3 NPR puzzles that don't seem very Perl-able, as well as several that were.
A good number of my solutions have turned on manipulation of canonical representation, especially for anagrams, but
