Journal: Announcing CPAN Testers 2.0 on 2010.07.05 4:50

Journal by barbie on 2010.07.05 4:50
User Journal

After 6 months of development work, following 2 years worth of design and preparation, CPAN Testers 2.0 is finally live.

With the rapid growth in CPAN Testers environments and testers over the past few years, the previous method of posting reports to a mailing list had reached a point where the scalability was no longer viable. This was recognised several years ago and discussions for a new system had already begun, with the view that reports should be submitted via HTTP.

If this was an isolated incident then yes blocking MS would be hysterics. However, they have been a consistence nuisance for the past year, and despite adding measures to reduce their tactics, they have decided to ramp up their use of the bots to the point it took out the site ... AGAIN.

The CPAN Testers server is something that a large part of the Perl eco-system relies on. Knocking it out of action is not something I am happy for anyone to do.

My reactions may have been emotional, but it has been a problem that has growing for a long time, and I'd had enough of having to monitor the server to make sure it didn't fall over because bots can't understand how to crawl a site politely.

The number of visits in the last month totalled 10,104, of that only 33 came from Bing related sites. These figures are taken from Google Analytics.

Both Ethne and Dan see no problem with their dad being known as Barbie by his friends. The question of why hasn't cropped up yet, but I'm sure it'll come :)

In November we reached the 6 million reports submitted mark. It's quite staggering how many reports are being submitted these days. It's now roughly 1 million reports every 3 months! So expect a 10 million reports post some time in August 2010 :)

Second, I know of no historical index of authorized releases

See the "CPAN Testers Upload Database Generator" section on the CPAN Testers Development site. You probably want the SQL database version :) (PS: it's updated hourly ;))

Now that I've got the YAPC::NA and YAPC::Europe surveys done and dusted, I can now start looking at some of the changes I want to make to the survey system. Some I have already been planning, while others have been suggested by people who have taken the surveys.

As I mentioned, I did try all types of escaping and quoting. In your examples the images contain the 3 characters '*' and "*" respectively as the text. Infuriating! Even trying to fool it with the hex value doesn't work, it gets translated into an asterisk, then 'convert' does the filename expansion on it!

Except I'd rather not have odd directories being created, especially if anything goes wrong. Plus it seems a lot more work than the "magic" space :)

ssshh! That's part of the magic ;)

From what I can see, that quite possibly is the reason.
