Test Your Backups!

Yesterday I installed MozCC to my Mozilla Firebird Browser, and managed to erase my Bookmarks.html file in the process!

Thankfully, I started to create backups on my system at home this weekend, nothing fancy just a tar.bz2 of key files on to another partition. The backup had worked perfectly, and I was able to recover my broken Bookmarks.html file.

  • Reminds me of an issue we had with Oracle several months ago. When upgrading from one version to another we needed to restore a *very important table* from a backup. Unfortunately, an ORA bug caused a particular table to be corrupted in the backup. Testing backups...very good idea.

    • I'm very happy I created a backup script, and tested it. Like you I've been bitten in the past by not making a backup, or having bad and/or out of date backups.
