The Last Word on Debate

[ #3813 ]
«"The partisan engaged in a debate cares nothing about what is right," Socrates says in one of Plato's dialogues, "but only to persuade others to agree with him."»

  • Socrates was wrong. Perhaps that is correct as a general rule, but it is certainly not absolute. I am partisan, but in debate I am most often interested more in shared englightenment than in winning anyone to my particular viewpoint. My goal is to understand and to be understood, more often than not.

Hm ... maybe that just means I am a bad partisan.
