Dear International Currency Symbol,

Formally, you are Latin-1 character number 164: ¤

You are the mascot for our times: you are both enterprising and obscure, both forgotten and unforgettable. No-one is sure what you are for, but everyone clamors to guess -- some kind of catch-all currently symbol? Some kind of math symbol? Some kind of APL thing? Some dodad the Soviets used because their computers were forbidden to show the vulgar "$" symbol? Or are you the embattled New Mexico flag held diagonally?

But the truth is that you are the Zelig of the eight-bit characters.
