Back to Humility

Been reading the alt.sports.soccer.worldcup2002 newsgroup and an interesting post by a US fan and knowledgable soccer referee.

He argues (quite convincingly) that our second goal should have been ruled offsides. But as one of the responses say, there's a standard error that's distributed across all of the matches (no instant replay challenges a la NFL ;)) and we just got lucky.

Also, my 'Take that, Europe' comment in the previous Journal entry - please don't take that the wrong way ... it's meant only as a proud retort to those (mostly Europeans, but also pretty much everyone, even us Yanks) that doubted the USA's chances against Portugal. Even our own ESPN said it would be 3-0 in the halftime ... the 3 being Portugal, though.

I believe the underdog role suits us just fine, though. Bring on Korea!
