Unicode with Vim?

Any suggestions on where I can read up about using Unicode with Vim? VI is really screwing things up and the info I've found online has been nearly useless.

I came across the following: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Make_your_system_use_unicode/utf-8/ [gentoo-wiki.com]. I'm not sure if that is lame to you. What are you trying to accomplish?

Usually I use gvim (to avoid screwing up my non-unicode aware terminal of choice) and I ":set encoding=utf8". What are your problems, more specifically ?
