Dave Winer on Slashcode

Q: What do you think of Slashcode?
A: I read an O'Reilly book on it. It looks awfully difficult to set up. At Userland, had a goal that 80% of people would get to the first post within 5 minutes [indeed!]. Doesn't address most of the issues that a publishing system has to. Weblogs are a more respectful environment since it's associated with your name.

(I'm sure the strangeness in grammar is just in typing a live voice feed)

I thought pudge might be interested to see that if he hadn't already.

  • From what I've seen of UserLand, it's more into the journal aspect of blogging. Whereas Slashcode is more for the news mode. I'm sure either can be used for either, but that's the impression that I get.

    Does UserLand support the multiple users editing the one stream (like pudge, Simon etc doing the front page of this very site)?

    At the very least, I get the feeling that Slashcode has more grunt. I could be wrong.

    And this has been my weekly posting full of virtually no facts.

  • So, setting up Slash is more complex than setting up a weblog on Radio Userland. Isn't that like saying that setting up use.perl is more difficult than starting a journal on use.perl?

    • I thought Radio was the thing you install locally - windows only...

      Dunno though. I honestly wouldn't listen to a single word Dave Winer says.
      • A few years ago, I used to read Dave's scripting.com web site, and would periodically send him email about the content of the site, and sometimes discuss things with him. Once too often I sent email to him that annoyed him -- I think on this occasion I asked him not to call something a "truly random number generator" when it was only pseudorandom -- and he requested that I stop reading his web site, so I did. And I haven't looked back since. :-)

        Anyway, of course Slash is more difficult to set up. It is
