When AIG was tanking, they replaced it with Kraft. Now, if you took out GM and replaced it with Family Dollar (FDO), you'd get a 200 point jump in the average (right now, at least). If you also replace Citigroup with Google, jumps to 11400. With just a few good replacements, the economy would be doing much better!! Just keep replacing bad companies with ones which are doing well. It's much cheaper than the "stimulus"!

(yes, I know there is some way in choosing the companies... but most don't know what it is and just look at the average to gauge the economy)

Italian Perl Workshop 2008

While the venue of YAPC::EU::2009 has not been announced yet, the future organizers will be using Twitter, Jaiku, and Pownce accounts, in order to help improve the communication with the attendees.

With the next venue being announced at this year's YAPC::EU in Copenhagen (on August 13th), maybe next year organizers will also make the announcement with these accounts in real time (for those not attending the conference).

Andy Lester writes "After a running the Perl Foundation Grant Committee for almost two years, Ovid has decided he needs to step down. Naturally, this means we need someone to step into this role and we're hoping to get new people into the Perl Foundation.

barbie writes "With preparations for YAPC::Europe::2007 well underway in Vienna, it is time for the YAPC::Europe Venue Committee to consider suitable hosts for the 2008 conference. Any dedicated group interested in hosting YAPC::Europe::2008 should send a brief statement of intent to venue@yapceurope.org. A full and complete application should then be sent to the same address prior to the deadline for applications, which is June 30, 2007.

For more information about the requirements for hosting a conference, you may want to refer to the YAPC organisers documentation (administered by TPF) or look at the examples of previous European conferences.

Please direct any questions to venue@yapceurope.org, and a member of the committee will endeavour to respond as soon as possible. The public announcement of the location for the 2008 conference will be announced during the 2007 conference in Vienna."

Submission deadlines is the last day of February, voting starts in March and we will be awarding the grants by the beginning of April.

On behalf of The Perl Foundation, Houston.pm is officially announcing the call for participation for Yet Another Perl Conference North America 2007. The conference will be held in Houston, Texas, June 25 — 27 at the University of Houston.

We updated the YAPC::Asia schedule a bit recently, and now the Call For Presentations deadline is one week away: January 31st, 2007. If you have an idea to speak in YAPC::Asia, whip it up and submit your proposal using the web form.

Also, we posted the suggestions where to stay during the conference in Tokyo. If you haven't, go book your flight to Tokyo and book the hotel now!
